Applied plasma science

Palm and plasma beam. Photo.The applied plasma research is directed to novel concepts in plasma sources and to development of plasma reactive systems and plasma processes. Non-conventional high-density plasma sources based on the hollow cathodes and microwave and hybrid plasmas have been developed by the group. Mechanisms of plasma reactive processes/systems and their relation to properties of process products are studied and evaluated in different applications. The research covers both the low pressure plasma systems and plasma reactive technologies based on non-equilibrium (cold) plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Cold atmospheric plasma shows potential for applications in many areas, from nano- and bio- to material and combustion technologies, plasma chemical synthesis and fuel reforming.

Plasma can be used for surface plasma treatment, structure modification, cleaning and synthesis of new materials. Plasma activated species can condense, react and form coatings – functional, decorative, permeation barriers, protective coatings, etc. New processes are evaluated within the program testing high-density plasma PVD.

The program aimed to conversion and destruction of hazardous gases and other polluting and contaminating agents embraces plasma science, plasma chemistry and plasma chemical kinetics. The processes of gas treatment are developed for important environmental applications linked to energy production, automotive and aerospace industries, to metallurgy and to paint, dyeing and printing industries. The objective of the project is to contribute to effective pollution control.
